Baseball in Brazil is strengthened by an ongoing MLB project in partnership with the Brazilian Baseball and Softball Confederation (CBBS), with sports centers focused on developing young talents.

Let's learn a little more about this sport in Sports Dice: Baseball.

Sports Dice: Baseball - Game Info

Sports Dice: Baseball is a 2-player game, age 7+, by designer Andy Geremia. Game Art by Paul Micarelli.

Game Designer Andy Geremia is well-known for the various adaptations of sports into dice games - a true specialist!

Let's play!

Playing the Game

As the pitcher, get ready: roll the dice aiming for a double or triple out of the opposing team; a strike might be all it takes to get an out or end the batter's inning.

If you're batting, roll the dice, steal a base or two, the pitcher might even hit the ball out of the strike zone and give you a ball, or maybe you'll hit the ball out of the field and run for a home run, or even better if it's a grand slam!

That's the scenario in Sports Dice: Baseball!

If you haven't understood anything so far and/or don't know baseball, don't worry. Here's a quick, very basic introduction so you can make the most of today's game and even watch baseball games on TV knowing your way around a match:

The baseball field is diamond-shaped, and basically has:

- Center area of the field: where the pitcher throws the balls;

- Home Base: where the batter is;

- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bases: bases where the players, previously batters, need to pass to get back to home base and score.

Baseball Field

Therefore, to score 1 point, the batter needs to pass through all 3 bases and return to home base - the batter's starting position.

Now that you know the basics and how to score, here are some important terms used regarding the pitcher and the batter.

PITCHER:

- Strike Zone: area where the pitcher must throw the ball so that the batter has the possibility to hit it;

- Ball: when the pitcher throws the ball outside the strike zone;

- Walk: if the pitcher throws 4 balls, that is, 4 balls outside the strike zone, the batter gets a walk, that is, goes to 1st base for free;

- Strike: when the pitcher hits the strike zone and the batter does not hit, or misses, the ball;

- Out: when the pitcher makes 3 strikes, the batter is eliminated, that is, an out.

Pitcher

BATTER:

- Single: when the batter hits a single ball that gets them to 1st base;

- Double: when the batter hits a ball that gets them to 2nd base;

- Home Run: when the batter hits the ball so hard that it goes out of the field, and after that they go through all 3 bases and reaches home base again, thus scoring 1 point. Important: if there are other players on any bases, they will also be able to return to home base and score a point each.

- Grand Slam: when all 3 bases are occupied by players and a home run occurs, this is worth 4 points (1 for the batter + 1 for each player who was on each base);

Batter
Batter

An entire baseball game has 9 rounds, called innings. Each inning is composed of two parts (high and low):

- High End: when the visiting team bats, and the home team pitches;

- Lower End: when the home team bats, and the visiting team pitches.

The Lower End and High End alternate after 3 batters from one team are eliminated, that is, after 3 outs.

Baseball Scoreboard
Baseball Scoreboard

Alright! Now, after this baseball "mini-course," if you knew nothing about baseball before, you're ready with the basics to enjoy Sports Dice: Baseball (or watch a game on TV).

Let's start with the setup:

- Place the game board in the center;

- Decide whether you'll play 3 innings (short game) or 9 innings (full game);

- Place the 3 baseball tokens in the following locations: 1 near Ball, 1 near Strike, and 1 near Out;

- Keep the score pad and pen nearby;

- Each player chooses a color, either blue or red, and takes their 3 respective runners;

- One of the players tosses the Power Chip;

- The winner decides whether to pitch or bat;

- In any case, the batter starts the game with the Power Chip facing their color;

- Now each player takes their respective 6 dice (6 batter dice and 6 pitcher dice).

Game Setup
Game Setup

The 6 batter dice each have 4 different faces:

- B (Ball): move the ball token 1 space forward; if 6 Bs come up in one roll, it's a walk;

- 1B (1st Base): place a batter runner on 1st base; all runners on bases also advance 1 base;

- 2B (2nd Base): place a batter runner on 2nd base; all runners on bases also advance 2 bases;

- HR (Home Run): the batter and all runners on bases score.

Batter Dice
Batter Dice

The 6 pitcher dice also have 4 different faces each:

- K (Strike): move the Strike token 1 space forward. If 6 Ks come up in one roll, it's an out. Move the Out token 1 space down.

- OUT: the batter is out. Move the Out token 1 space down.

- DP (Double Play): eliminate up to 2 runners from the batter of your choice (the batter and any runner on base, or 2 runners on base). Move the Out token 1 or 2 spaces, depending on how many were eliminated.

- TP (Triple Play): eliminate up to 3 runners from the batter of your choice (batter and some runners on base, or 3 runners on base), move the Out token appropriately.

Pitcher Dice
Pitcher Dice

And for all intents and purposes of the game:

- the pitcher stands in the empty space in the center of the field, after all, supposedly, "you" are there to pitch;

- the batter, in turn, "is at home base" waiting to hit the ball;

- runners are only used when bases are gained.

Understanding this level of abstraction, let's begin an inning, that is, a turn:

- both players roll their respective dice simultaneously;

- each player will make the play with the face that appeared most often on their dice, HOWEVER

- only the team with the most dice showing the chosen face actually executes the play.

Example: Pitcher has 4 K dice against Batter 3 1B dice. Final result is a Strike
Example: Pitcher has 4 K dice against Batter 3 1B dice. Final result is a Strike

If there is a tie between the pitcher and the batter, whoever has the Power Chip decides to use it in their favor or not, knowing that when they use the token, it flips over and goes to the opponent.

After deciding the winner of the inning, apply the results, which are:

- moving the tokens on the game board;

- moving the batter's runners.

Moving the token after a Strike
Moving the token after a Strike

Important Rules: On the game board, the number of Balls, Strikes, and Outs are controlled with tokens. When these tokens reach their maximum value, something happens:

- On the 4th Ball: the batter gets a Walk and places 1 runner on 1st Base;

- On the 3rd Strike: the pitcher gets an Out;

- On the 3rd Out: the teams switch pitcher and batter positions, and this means the end of an inning.

Never forget: Whenever there is a Walk, an Out, or a Score, the Ball and Strike tokens must be reset to zero, because, for all intents and purposes, another batter has entered the field.

After the 3rd Out, as already mentioned, the players switch sides, that is, they exchange pitcher and batter dice, score their points, and start a new inning, low or high.

That's how a turn, or rather, an inning, works in Sports Dice: Baseball!

Ending the Game

The game ends after 3 (or 9) innings.

Whoever has the most points wins!

If it ends in a tie, extra innings must be played until one of the players is ahead on the scoreboard at the end of an inning.

Strategy Tips

Sports Dice: Baseball brings all the best moments and plays from a real baseball game, and that's the reason for its success, while also being fast-paced and strategic.

There's a real thrill when rolling dice, which I'm a big fan of. Luck is a factor, but it can be mitigated by the Power Chip and strategy itself; sometimes it's better to actually give up a walk than to give up the advantage of having the tiebreaker in your favor.

It's a mental game that plays on the opponent's psychology, because the pitcher, by managing the balls and outs, makes the batter nervous and, sometimes, due to the pressure of the moment, he might end up using the Power Chip at the wrong time.

Similarly, a batter accepting a strike can sometimes be the difference between having or keeping a player on base or not. Knowing how to manage the tiebreakers makes perfect sense.

The truth is this: the Power Chip makes all the difference during the game for those who know how to manage it.

One thing is certain: use it to your advantage if, as a batter, you are about to hit a home run and/or grand slam. If you are a pitcher and have a third out coming, don't hesitate to use the Power Chip.

Managing the indicators of ball, strike, out, managing the Power Chip and the game score is truly the secret to success. These variables, together, will guide your strategy and decisions during the game.

Furthermore, pay attention to any opportunities, devise your best strategy, find the best timing for when to use (or not use) the Power Chip, and win in Sports Dice: Baseball.

Pedagogical Tips

If you're looking for a fast-paced, fun, exciting game that brings the "good tension" of dice, Sports Dice: Baseball might be the game for you!

It's a fact: kids love to roll dice, and they get incredibly excited with each roll, so you're sure they'll enjoy the game. If they don't know much Baseball, you can also try to adapt all the in-game slang. Here are some suggestions for adaptation and explanation:

- Ball: say the pitcher threw the ball far, that he "badly missed"!;

- Strike: say the batter tried to hit the ball and missed, spinning the bat without hitting anything;

- Out: say the batter missed 3 times when batting, and now he has to go out;

- and so on, use your imagination and terms appropriate to the children's age.

And of course, depending on their age, you can teach all the baseball rules to the kids. You'll be preparing future fans to watch the games with.

The game also provides important stimuli for children:

- resource management: to manage and monitor the game's indicators;

- strategy: to know how to read the entire game and, based on that, develop a strategy;

- decision-making: deciding when to concede or not in case of ties;

- logical-mathematical reasoning: to keep track of the bases and the game's score.

Pedagogically, Sports Dice: Baseball addresses resource management, stimulates strategy, decision-making, logical-mathematical reasoning, and on top of that, it's fun!

I recommend Sports Dice: Baseball for your collection!
