Tinderblox CuriositiesTinderblox was published in 2020 by Alley Cat Games, a publisher specialized in pocket and simpler games. The game was designed to be portable, fast, and fun, ideal for casual get-togethers, cafes, or travel. The art is characteristic of Rory Muldoon, known for his minimalist and colorful style. He brought the cards and components to life, reinforcing the game's visual charm and creating a light and inviting atmosphere.During the game, the idea of playing with fire is taken literally, as any mistake, i.e., dropping something from the campfire, can "burn the player," since the game simulates a campfire.Tinderblox has high replayability due to its speed and portability, making it ideal as a filler or warm-up game before longer sessions.Let's get to know Tinderblox, this phenomenon with over 30,000 copies sold!Tinderblox - Game InfoTinderblox is a game for 2 to 6 players, ages 6+, designed by Rob Sparks. Game art by Rory Muldoon.Game BoxTinderblox was released in 2020 by Alley Cat Games. Its main mechanics are pick-up and delivery, and last player standing.Game ComponentsLet's play!Playing the GameWe're at a campsite, it's late afternoon and night approaches, so it's time to light the campfire, and of course, keep it burning. To do this, we take turns feeding the fire. Simple, right? Of course not! To avoid accidents, we have to use tweezers, but since we're camping with friends, there will obviously be challenges, like: stacking things to feed the fire, using the "non-dominant" hand, and so on.The challenge is to feed the fire without knocking anything over, because whoever does will "get burned" and have to leave the camp! So, who has the most dexterity and will be considered the best camper? This is the scenario of Tinderblox! The idea is to "play with fire" by feeding the campfire, knowing that the bigger the fire, the less stable it becomes! That's the "fun" of Tinderblox. The setup goes like this:- place the campfire card in the center (choose easy or advanced mode);- Place 3 logs on the campfire as described on the campfire card;- Place the remaining logs and fire cubes in the game tin and mix them;- Place the tin and tweezers next to the campfire;- Shuffle the game cards and form a deck face down next to the campfire;- The player who most recently went camping goes first.Game SetupThere are basically two game "modes," depending on the initial campfire card. Easy mode consists of 3 aligned logs to start the campfire, while the advanced mode also has 3 logs, but one is stacked on top of the other 2, making it more difficult.Game ModesThe turns are simple, consisting of:- revealing a card;- using the tweezers to pick up the components on the card;- placing it on the campfire. The beginning of the turn consists of revealing a card from the deck and checking what must be put on the bonfire, and importantly, following the same arrangement shown on the card, that is, it can be a fire cube on a log, 2 fire cubes, a log vertically and so on, but you always have to follow the arrangement.Example game cardsNow it's time to use the tweezers and take the components from the tin according to the revealed card. You must remove the components from the tin as requested on the card and arrange them, according to the image on the card, outside the campfire for now, and this makes all the difference because if you drop something during this part, you won't be eliminated.Game components mixed on the tinImportant: Some cards have a "switch hand" icon in the upper left corner, and this is one of the things that makes Tinderblox unique. The symbol means you have to hold the tweezers with your non-dominant hand, that is, if you are right-handed, you must use your left hand and vice versa.A card with the switch-hand iconNow comes the climax of the game: placing the items from the card on the fire, and as you may have already noticed, dexterity is crucial. Although it looks simple, this is where your hand "shakes", it's a thrill! Even more so when you're using your non-dominant hand.Placing components with the non-dominant handThis is truly the most intense moment of the game, because at this point, if you knock something over, you've "burned" yourself, and you're eliminated!Regardless of whether you knocked something over or managed to stack it on the bonfire, play continues with the player to your left. That's how a turn of Tinderblox goes!Ending the GameIn Tinderblox, the game can end in two ways:- when only one player remains and all others have been eliminated;- when the deck runs out of cards. If only one player remains, they win the game and are named "Best Camper".If the cards run out and there are still 2 or more players in the game, all remaining players share the victory.Strategy TipsTinderblox is all about dexterity and "keeping it cool". It's one of those games that seems simple, without strategy, and uncomplicated - big mistake! The fact that stacking has to be done according to the card's arrangement, and sometimes with your non-dominant hand, makes Tinderblox seem anything but simple and easy. Not that it's difficult, but the game sure isn't joking around, especially when it comes to stacking, because that's where strategy comes into play. If it's easy to stack, good for you, but try to put it in the "worst possible place," that is, leaving it "as unstable" as possible for the next player. Is this spite? No, it's strategy!Pay attention, because the tweezers are small, especially for adult hands, and the components are even smaller, so it's normal to "shake" when placing items on the fire; you really need a lot of dexterity, especially with your non-dominant hand, as the "shaking" is more frequent. One thing that Tinderblox teaches is that it's essential to pick up the components, after arranging them, from the bottom, i.e., the base. Trying to pick up items "from above," with the tweezers vertically, is a sure way to make them fall. Trust me, or risk it and be eliminated quickly. But, definitely, the golden tip is: stack carefully and always try to make it increasingly difficult for the next player. If you can and have the skill, leave it slightly "unbalanced," that is, on the verge of falling – that's the best strategy.Furthermore, pay attention to the opportunities in the game, devise your best stacking strategy, don't make life easy for your opponents, and win in Tinderblox.Unboxing, Rules, and GameplayUnboxing:Rules:Gameplay:Pedagogical TipsIf you're looking for a game that will definitely get the kids' attention and provide them with many fun memories, Tinderblox is definitely the game for you!The game is beautiful, the tin is lovely, the components are very realistic, the cards are iconic (zero language), so in short, only positive points. The idea of building a campfire and everyone having the "good tension" of picking up the components in the tin with tweezers, and trying to stack everything on the fire without knocking anything over, it's all just great. These will be very fun moments that the kids will remember for a long time.Their attention will be on the whole time, as they carefully stack the items. It's common and fun for the kids to try to "scare" their friends when they're trying to put the items on the fire, and that's part of the charm. For kids, Tinderblox has to be like this, and it's a game they'll want to play again and again because it's fast-paced, which is great; you can play several games in a row without getting bored. And don't be fooled, you'll soon notice the kids trying to make life difficult for their classmates in the stacking game; it's only a matter of time before they "figure it out" in the game. Let it happen naturally; it's part of their development in the game. The great thing, besides the fun, is that they'll also receive important stimuli while playing:- resource management: to manage the items when organizing them to go to the campfire;- fine coordination: to control hand and fingers for precise moves;- dexterity: to have skill and efficiency during stacking;- strategy: to know where to place the items in the campfire;- decision-making: to know when to make life difficult for other players, or not;- logical-mathematical reasoning: to calculate how many players are left. From a pedagogical standpoint, Tinderblox addresses resource management, fine motor skills, dexterity, stimulates strategy, decision-making, logical-mathematical reasoning, and on top of that, it's very entertaining!I recommend Tinderblox for your collection!
